Fresh Indian River Fruit
Getting back to basics is often a good thing, especially when it comes to our diets. For the last two decades, the U.S. government has been imploring its citizens to eat more fresh fruits and vegetables. The popular food pyramid guide that was introduced in the early 1990s prominently featured fresh fruits and vegetables. Unfortunately, the guide was ultimately unsuccessful.
At the start, medical professionals recommended two to four servings of fruit on a daily basis. When few Americans heeded their advice, they dropped the number of servings down to just two. But fruit consumption still lagged! One obvious culprit was new snack foods that Americans couldn’t seem to get enough of. They gobbled up millions of tons of potato chips, pretzels, and other unhealthy treats all year round.
Where are we now?
Americans spend tens of billions of dollars each year on junk food. On Halloween, we part with over two billion dollars to purchase candy, which is then distributed to millions of American kids. Is it any wonder that we are one of the sickest nations on the face of the Earth? Two out of three of us are either obese or overweight. Weight-related diseases and conditions are, not surprisingly, on the rise as well. Not to mention the fact that obesity is now the leading cause of preventable death.
When examining a problem as hefty as the obesity epidemic (pun intended), it is helpful to start with the simplest possible explanation. As much as the experts and soi-distant diet gurus like to talk about plans and programs that can cure us, they almost always do so because they have an agenda. More often than not, they are simply trying to sell a product. At that end of the day, most folks gain weight because they consume more calories than they burn. And one of the reasons average Americans do so is because they eat snacks that add calories and almost nothing else. Sugary, buttery, and salty treats rarely fill us up. Most of us can eat a lot of them, which is why we consume 500 calories a day more than we did just a generation ago!

Of course, we do not need these extra calories! If we did, we wouldn’t always be hungry and/or tired. Replacing these empty calories with better, more nutritious ones, such as those we find in Indian River fruit, not only helps us reduce our daily caloric intake, it should also help us drop excess pounds. Indian River fruit is brimming with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and dietary fiber. All of the aforementioned are exceedingly salubrious and help to keep us full because they contain a lot of volume and few calories. Although good for us in all of its forms, the healthiest way to enjoy Indian River fruit is fresh from the tree.
