How to Make Grapefruit Part of Your Daily Diet
Americans know that they need to eat more fruits and vegetables, like healthy grapefruit, so why don’t more people make healthy food choices? For many people it’s a question of time and convenience. Busy with work, school, taking care of the kids and the other daily tasks that have to get done people turn to fast food and quick sugary snacks that will give them a sugar rush instead of healthy slow cooked food and fruits and vegetables. Most people, if asked, would say that they would eat more grapefruit and other citrus fruits if it was more convenient but that they just don’t have the time. If you are committed to eating healthy and really don’t know how to make time for healthy eating in your busy life here are some sure fire ways to change the way you eat and incorporate more healthy oranges, grapefruits, and other fruits and vegetables into your life:
Plan ahead – Citrus fruit like oranges and grapefruit will stay fresh and tasty for a long time, especially if stored in a cool, dark place. Buy one or two large boxes of fruit so that you won’t run out quickly. If you have to go to the store to get fruit chances are you won’t, so once or twice a month order a couple of boxes so you’ll always have some on hand. If you are worried about the cost split a box or two with a friend or family member and then you’ll both have plenty of fresh, delicious citrus fruit.
Stash, stash, stash – Location is everything when it comes to healthy snacks. Most people pick candy bars, chips, or high calorie coffee drinks for snacks instead of fruit because those items are closeby but fruit isn’t. Keep some grapefruit in your desk drawer at work, or in a box in the break room. Always keep an orange and a grapefruit or some tangerines in your purse or gym bag so that you have a quick snack at the ready. And always have several pieces of fruit in the glove box of the car, or in an unused cup holder, so that there are quick and healthy snacks available for the kids at all times.
Rethink dessert – Instead of reaching for ice cream or sweets at night reach for a piece of fruit. Grapefruit is sweet and tangy and the fiber in the fruit will keep you full until morning. If you really are craving sweets spoon some grapefruit compote over frozen yogurt or ice cream.
